BIG SPELLING
In Big Spelling there are 10 or 15 words for each child to learn on a weekly basis depending on the level they are on. The level they have been given was decided by an assessment that the whole class took. The children were tested cold to ensure that they hadn't learnt the words by rote and that a true reflection on their spelling ability was gained.
The lists start at A and get progressively more complex as they move through to Q, where there are lots of very challenging words to learn. Each child has been given their own spelling folder and spelling book. As from Monday they will also be given some Look, Say, Cover, Write Check sheets to practise their words on a daily basis in school as well as at home.
The spelling lists were sent home with the children on Friday so if your child hasn't shared their list with you yet please ask to see it. Throughout the week, the children will have time to test one another on whiteboards during guided reading sessions. Each Friday before their Big Write, the children will be tested on their words. WE ARE STARTING ON LIST 1.
The children will be put into pairs to test one another. A will hold B's sheet making sure they can not see the words, and read out the spellings, while B writes them out in their spelling book. Then they will swap over. They will carefully mark each other's spellings. They will get a tick i.f it correct and a dot if it is incorrect. The children will highlight the words they get right off their list for you to see which ones they need further practise on.
If the children get 9 or 10 out of 10, or 14 or 15 out of 15 correct, they move on to the next list on the sheet which they will then be tested on the following week. If they make one mistake they can still move on but the word they got wrong must carry over to the next set of words and they will be tested on it the following week. If the children get 8 or less out of 10 or 13 or less out of 15 they will not move on to the next list of spellings and will have to keep practising these to be retested the following week.
I am sure the children are going to enjoy this scheme as they have to take ownership for their own spelling. The importance however, is that the children don't just learn their words for a one off test, but that they know them inside out and can spell them correctly every time they use those words.
